There is an intensive research and development of therapeutic procedures and new drugs in all medical fields, also in gerontopsychiatry,thanks to the new and more accessible technologies as well. A basic overview of the news in gerontopsychiatry is presented.

Family psychoeducation for severe mental illness

Family psychoeducation is complex intervention for patients and their families. Psychoeducational programs for severe mentalillness provide systematic, relevant, broad and up-to-date information about the illness, emotional support and problem solvingskills training. There is evidence that psychoeducation for schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and depression improves the outcomesof both patients and their relatives. The goal of this review is to describe practical aspects of psychoeducation, including arrangementof programs, topics and availability in the Czech Republic.

Excessive sleepiness (hypersomnolence) is a relatively common occurrence following sleep deprivation and, similarly, a prevalent symptom accompanying a number of neurological, psychiatric and other medical disorders, infections and traumas. Treatment of depressive disorders in pain syndromes

Comorbidity of depressive disorder and chronic pain is very common in clinical practice. It is connected to worse prognosis andmore severe symptoms of both of them. A recognition of depressive disorder is the most important as it is often manifested withsomatic symptoms only. Common neurobiological mechanisms clarify the effectivity of antidepressants and psychotherapy intreatment of pain. Both noradrenergic and serotonergic effect is needed for analgesic effect, so the older tricyclic antidepressantsand newer dual antidepressants SNRI are used.

Trazodone once‑daily in depression

A new extended release formula of trazodone oral tablets is available in the Czech Republic since 2015. It is intended for the treatment of depression of various etiology. It has beneficial effect in cases with comorbid anxiety and insomnia. The maximum potential of the full trazodone dose can be employed in such group of patients. Family therapy in psychiatric care

Family therapy continues to become more and more accepted method to cure menthal illnesses. The casuistry describes psychotherapeuticwork with a patient (11 years) with a principal obsessive compulsive disorder illness. The intervention is based onsystematic family therapy with a special focus to the family context. Throughout the psychotherapeutic process, the whole familywas gradually involved by means of therapy tasks, externalization, scaling, questions on wonders, questions on exceptions, timeaxis. Family therapy substantially contributed to life quality of the family.
